Opening Reception April 1, 2010 6:00pm – 9:00pm Artist in attendance.

Artist Statement: ”Epiphanies of the Daily Committed” explores hybridizing the creative techniques and conventions of fine arts painting with comics. Through first person narratives these artworks aim to represent the experiencing of everyday life as a site that is potentially rich with moments of epiphany.

Artist Bio: Grant (Earl) Collins is a visual artist whose image making practices draw on the conventions and techniques of comics and fine arts painting.

Throughout his education in Fine Arts and Communications, Grant has pursued his artistic and sociological interests by questioning the nature and social construction of art as it pertains to contemporary culture.

Grant has collaborated on research projects with faculty from Concordia’s Communications Department (Dr. Matt Soar and Dr.Owen Chapman), and has exhibited his artwork in a variety of venues throughout Montreal. He has also worked with Cadmium Scenique on a wide range of film and theater projects, whose clients include: Cirque de Soleil, Vancouver 2010 Olympics (opening ceremonies), and film productions such as “The Aviator”, “300”, and “Night at the Museum”. Through his personal painting commissions Grant has specialized in large format, high-realist, and specialty painting techniques.

POST exhibit is pleased to present experimental films by video artist Russell J. Chartier, and composer Paul J. Botelho. February 3 – 13 2010. Opening reception February 4, 2010,  6 – 9pm.

Russell J. Chartier attended the College of Santa Fe. Since that time he has spent many years working in Broadcast Television working for various networks including A&E, The History Channel, YES Network and several others. His work in the Video Art Medium explores multiple layers and focuses heavily on texture and color. Many of the images in his works are distorted and manipulated in various unorthodox ways in an attempt to create a visual depth where recognizable images will appear within the collage of manipulated images and textures.

Paul J. Botelho
The work of composer Paul J. Botelho focuses on the interaction between live and computer performance. His compositions include many varied works that utilize extended techniques, alternate tuning systems, as well as the interaction of new and old mediums. He performs as a vocalist, guitarist, and pianist, often in improvisatory situations. Botelho has composed and performed a series of one-act operas that incorporate live acoustic instruments and electronic components. These works encompass all of his varied disciplines and represent the breadth of his work. He received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from Princeton University, M.A. in Electro-Acoustic Music from Dartmouth College, and B.F.A in Contemporary Music Composition and Performance from the College of Santa Fe. He currently is Assistant Professor of Music Technology at Loyola University New Orleans. (Flyer design by Beni Johnson: http://www.benijohnson.com/ )

POST Exhibit is pleased to present Façade, an installation by Shyra De Souza.

Utilizing paper on painted wood multiples, De Souza examines the role of identity and self-expression in residential communities, and a response to the work of Byron Kim’s piece entitled Synecdoche.

Bio:

De Souza is an interdisciplinary artist based in Calgary where she grew up in the practical environment of the suburbs.  She attended the Sculpture department at the Alberta College of Art & Design where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts with distinction in 2006.  Her work often results in visual and social interventions in order to undermine the dominant thinking of contemporary western culture.  As well as maintaining an artistic studio practice she holds the Vice-Chair position at the Untitled Art Society in Calgary and is a founding member of the Media and Visual Arts Housing Association of Calgary.  De Souza has recently been awarded the Quickdraw Animation Society Production Scholarship during which she will be undertaking experimental approaches to the creation of animated film.

Saturday, January 16, noon to 5 pm: Installation open for viewing.

Facade -installation

Mixed media works by Gail Scheuring based on Michel Foucault’s theory of Panopticism, social control and self monitoring through excessive use of surveillance systems.  The majority of these surveillance devices are found in urban settings and are also employed by the general population through the use of social media, Google Earth and cell phone photography.

These mixed-media paintings depict the object of surveillance while also revealing the device.

POST Exhibit is pleased to present Façade, an installation by Shyra De Souza.

This piece, entitled Façade, is an examination of the role of identity and self-expression in residential communities, and a response to the work of Byron Kim’s piece entitled Synecdoche.  To complete this work I went to a respected, and affluent residential area on the fringes of Calgary`s residential sprawl. The dominant light yellow/beige/off white colouring is accentuated by the sparse placement of trees and shrubs and nearly flush arrangement of the house facades.   This ambiguous view of the area, with Byron Kim’s work in mind, was the catalyst for this piece.  Building on this idea I pose the question of what happens to this individuality when we are faced with the reality of being, or becoming a member of a community that requires a group mentality in order to function.  My intent with this piece is to point to the double-edged sword that always exists in that space between the individual and the community-at-large.

Artist will be in attendance at the opening reception on First Thursday January 7th, 6-9pm

POST Exhibit presents Peepshow

Installation by Gail Scheuring: Drawing upon references to women in art history, Minimalism, Surrealism and voyeurism; this installation piece speaks to sexuality and consumer culture in a “feminized” space. Inspired by the artists Jessica Stockholder and Peter Halley, as well as images of sex shops, the colors represent an interruption of space and have a distinct psychological effect upon the viewer. The bright hues represent the garishness of artificial light seen in store fluorescent or “technological” light. Although this installation is devoid of the female form, it still takes on a feminized space through the inclusion of what can be interpreted as being domestic “feminized” objects.

Opening Reception First Thursday December 3rd, 6-9pm
